Plastic takes about 500 years to decompose. Think about it, we will be long gone and yet the plastic products we’ve used since we were born will still be here! Poor Mother Earth!
Earth Day is just around the corner and we can see everywhere, most especially in our social media news feeds the various environment awareness campaigns to help save Planet Earth.
The plastic problem of the world
One major issue that's being tackled constantly by these environment awareness campaigns is the plastic pollution problem. And we can no longer turn a blind eye into it.
Let’s admit it, traveling alone requires a lot of plastic usage. Remember the plastic straw you used while drinking that thirst quenching soda? Or the plastic spoon and fork you used when you had to grab a quick meal along the way? And don’t forget the disposable cup you got when you ordered your favorite Espresso. The list goes on and on. It’s unimaginable that a product that seems so simple and so harmless can be this damaging. And the ugly truth is -- plastic product usage has been badly hurting our environment for the longest time.
We’ve seen it in the news -- sea creatures sending us signs that this plastic problem is getting really really bad. You might have read about a whale washed up ashore dead with heavy plastics in its stomach or you might have heard about that poor turtle that’s been unjustly tangled into lots and lots of plastic. It's just so heart breaking.
Luckily, as we are becoming more and more aware, we are becoming more responsible human beings. In response to this public outcry about plastic pollution, actions had been taken to abandon one-time use plastic products. Washington D.C. for instance had imposed a ban on the use of plastic straws in restaurants effective January 1, 2019. In the travel industry, airlines also did its part. American Airlines was the first major airline to ban plastic straws from its lounges and from its flights. And they are not alone. A lot of states, countries and companies had started way before and a lot more follow suit.
We have to act now before it’s too late
